Same sex marriages now legal but think about a pre-nup - our family lawyers suggest


In a landmark reform, same-sex marriages are now legal. Up until now, the law has only recognised Civil Partnerships which are not entirely synonymous with marriage. This may be partly why many same-sex couples decided to simply cohabit with one another. However, cohabitation has a very different legal status to marriage, particularly if the relationship were to break down.

Additional paternity leave, a recent case clarifies employment law.


Under additional paternity leave a father can take up to six months’ leave once the mother has returned to work. The earliest time is 20 weeks after the birth of the child and the right expires on the child’s first birthday. The father can also take the equivalent of any unused maternity pay.
