Care Quality Commission raises concerns over care given to elderly patients

17 October 2011

We have previously reported that following an investigation carried out in 2010, the Health Service Ombudsman found that patients over the age of 65 have suffered unnecessary pain, neglect and distress while receiving treatment under the NHS.

The BBC News website has reported that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has carried out unannounced visits to 100 hospitals and too many hospitals are not providing an adequate level of basic care.

The areas looked at were dignity and nutrition and BBC News has reported that 45 hospitals were compliant, 35 met the standards but there was room for improvement and 20 hospitals were failing.

CQC identified a number of common problems including call bells being placed out of reach of elderly patients, curtains not being closed properly, staff speaking in a dismissive way and help not being provided during mealtime.

If you or a family member has been injured during a stay in Hospital or in a Nursing or Care Home, you may be entitled to compensation.  Contact our Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence team today for a telephone conversation or a free, preliminary meeting.
