Changes to insurance premiums

Insurers can no longer use gender related factors to determine premiums and benefits under insurance policies and annuities.

The European Court of Justice recently decided that using gender related factors when setting prices for car insurance, annuities and life assurance will be invalid from 21^st December 2012.

Men and women will pay the same premiums for car insurance from 21^st December. Presumably driving history will be key to assessing premiums.

The cost of life assurance for women and annuities for men is likely to rise from 21^st December 2011.
