Compensation for family of a man who died after misdiagnosis

06 September 2011

The BBC has reported that the family of a man who died after a hospital failed to diagnose his condition has been awarded substantial compensation.

The man was suffering from severe pain in his groin and could hardly walk.  The hospital misdiagnosed his condition as a muscle strain and sent him home on two occasions.

The man was suffering from Crohn’s Disease, a serious inflammation of the intestines which resulted in him developing an abscess following a perforation of his bowel.  Sadly, he died of blood poisoning on Christmas Day.  The NHS Trust has admitted that a second opinion would almost certainly have saved the man’s life.
