Health and Safety Executive fine company after worker is fatally injured at work

21 September 2011

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reported that a farming company has been fined after a worker was killed when he was crushed between the rollers of a potato harvester.

The worker was replacing the rubber sleeves on the rollers of the machine.  One of his colleagues turned on the power to help ensure the rollers were in the correct place and then left the worker to complete the work.  Sadly, when the colleague returned to the harvester, he found that the worker was trapped between the rollers.

The HSE said the company had failed to conduct a proper assessment of the risks involved and there was no safe system of work in place for the maintenance to be carried out.

This accident highlights the importance of workplace regulations which employers and employees must follow to help prevent accidents at work.
