Is your hair dye safe?

04 November 2011

The Law Gazette has reported that people have suffered severe allergic reactions after using hair dye containing para-phenylenediamine (PPD).  Symptoms include a sensation of severe burning, a swollen face and tongue as well as damage to hair follicles and hair loss.

The Law Gazette has reported that, under EU law, hair dye manufacturers are permitted to use PPD in hair dye although it was previously banned in several European countries.  The Law Gazette reports that an e-petition has been started to encourage the UK government to review the use of PPD in hair dye.
