Panorama programme - will writers

17 March 2011

Anybody can write a will for themselves or for somebody else.  How effective the document is however, is an entirely different matter.  A recent Panorama programme concerning will writers identified significant concerns with instructing some will writers, rather than solicitors, to draft wills and administer estates after death.  The programme highlighted that will writers’ charges are often much greater than initially advertised and that inappropriate or unnecessary packages may be sold to customers.  There is a real problem distinguishing between the quality of different will writers.

Using solicitors offers significant protection.  Solicitors are legally qualified and regulated by the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority.  They must provide detailed and accurate information setting out charges from the outset.  All solicitors must also carry appropriate indemnity insurance.
