Risk assessments in the workplace

07 November 2011

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published a guide to risk assessments in the workplace.

Employers are required to protect their workers as far as is “reasonably practicable.”  We often receive enquiries from people who have been injured at work where the accident could have been avoided had their employer carried out risk assessments.

 The HSE’s five step guide:

  Identify the hazards

  • Decide who might be harmed and how
  • Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions
  • Record your findings and implement them
  • Review your assessment and update if necessary

Full details of the HSE’s five step guide to risk assessments can be found on the HSE website.
