What are Lasting Powers of Attorney and do I really need one?

Family consulting Public Notary in office

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) let you choose people you trust to act for you, it lets you choose what decisions they are allowed to make (financial, health or both) and when they can make these decisions.

The Office of the Public Guardian’s current campaign “Your voice, your decision” aims to promote the importance and benefits of LPAs. The campaign also seeks to dispel popular myths and gives some real life stories. https://powerofattorney.campaign.gov.uk/

People often think that they are too young to put into place LPAs but an unexpected accident may result in you becoming incapable of managing your own affairs. If you don’t have LPAs in place someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed your deputy. This is a time consuming and expensive process and takes away from you control as to who will make these decisions on your behalf.

We can help. If you need any advice or have any questions on LPAs, please speak to one of our experienced wills, probate and powers of attorney lawyers.

our lawyers deliver an excellent quality service, independently recognised by The Law Society and our many returning clients.
