What is a trust?
In simple terms a trust is an arrangement where assets are held by someone (trustees) for the benefit (or "in trust") for someone else. Typically, this occurs where money is left in a will for a child. A trust would be set up and the trustee would look after that money until the child becomes an adult. There are many other occasions though where a trust might be beneficial.
What are the benefits of a trust?
There are many types of trusts and they can serve many different purposes including:
- provide for an infant or young person
- provide for a disabled person or someone who lacks mental capacity
- save tax
- protect assets and protect beneficiaries
